Personal accident insurance
The insured injury matters more than the headline payout.
Use 10 sourced policy records from 8 legal insurers to compare a qualifying accident, the disability scale, and whether the plan is sold on its own, through another policy or through a retailer.

Which accident outcome do you need funded?
A selected route changes the comparison prompt only. It does not decide whether you qualify.
Step 2 of 3 · Policy shortlist
Compare 10 personal accident policies
10 sourced policies from 8 legal insurers; each record names its carrier and official evidence. Insurers linked to this shortlist are shown for factual comparison, not endorsement.
RCS, Finchoice and Mr Price Money share Guardrisk Life. Accident Plus lacks disability cover; EssentialMED needs hospital cover and excludes death. Other add-ons and commuter plans have access limits.
All prices need an individual quote; published examples are not comparable entry premiums.
Selected insured sum, benefit type, family members, occupation and access route can change the premium; a published example is not your price. Confirm the current premium, policy wording, limits, excesses, waiting periods and underwriting outcome with the provider.
Rating (1-5) counts five source checks: legal identity, product scope, entry conditions, a comparable price basis and claims instructions. A tick confirms only the named field in the source; an unconfirmed check is not a missing policy benefit. Scores are not customer reviews, claims performance or recommendations. Each record has a review date and owner. Our comparison methodology.

A source-check tick confirms only that the named information was found in the reviewed official material. An unconfirmed field does not prove the policy lacks a benefit. Compare the accepted wording, schedule and individual quote before deciding.
Accident anatomy
Trace cause, injury and payable percentage
A wrist fracture can be serious without qualifying for a permanent-disability lump sum. A plan with temporary-disablement or accident hospital cash may respond differently. Check the precise selected benefit and the medical evidence; do not infer payment from the photograph or the word “accident”.
Was the event insured?
Check cause, excluded activities, road-use terms, dates and territory.
Who and what were selected?
Verify the insured person, death or disability amount, and whether temporary benefit was added.
What does the scale pay?
Apply the injury percentage and any event cap to the scheduled sum.
For non-accidental death look at life cover. For earnings lost through illness or injury, compare income protection and its waiting period.
Five different outcomes
Separate accidental death, disability and hospital cash
| Benefit | Typical payment | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Accidental death | Scheduled lump sum to a beneficiary or estate | Natural-cause death belongs to life cover, unless separately insured |
| Permanent disablement | All or a percentage of the insured sum | The schedule's anatomical or occupational test controls |
| Temporary disablement | Selected periodic or fixed benefit | Not included in every personal accident policy |
| Hospital cash | Specified daily amount after an accident | Not medical aid and not an invoice reimbursement |
| Commuter-only cover | Defined road or public-transport event | Does not automatically cover accidents at home or work |
A hospital cash amount is not payment of a hospital account. Compare hospital cash with medical scheme and insurance roles before relying on it for care.
The quote-ready check
Put the same injury in front of each insurer
| Question | Why it changes value | Ask for evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Accident definition | A road collision and illness-related fall can be treated differently | Which events and causal links qualify? |
| Disability scale | Loss of a finger may pay a fraction of the headline sum | What percentage applies to the injury in the wording? |
| Work and activities | Manual work, delivery, sport or motorcycling may change acceptance | Which declared duties and activities are insured? |
| Time and territory | A 24-hour promise may still have travel and residency rules | Where and when is the person covered? |
| Access route | A rider needs another policy; a retail-channel plan may have several payment routes | Can I buy this on its own, and is a base policy or account actually required? |
Not every plan serves the same loss: Clientèle's Accident Plus table lists hospital cash and accidental death but no disability benefit. EssentialMED's disability addition needs the hospital benefit and does not insure death. King Price labels personal accident non-stand-alone; the retail-channel commuter plan has a narrower motor-vehicle trigger, while its A2B-specific entry route needs confirmation. These boundaries are shown in the records, not hidden in a price rank.
Where a benefit may respond
- Accidental death at the scheduled amount where the event qualifies
- Permanent disability at the relevant percentage in the benefit scale
- Temporary disability or hospital cash only on a plan expressly providing it
- Some 24-hour or overseas accidents subject to the policy territory and occupation rules
Where it may not
- Illness-only disability without an insured accidental cause
- An accident outside the selected work, road, travel or territorial scope
- An injury not listed in the disability table or not meeting the permanence test
- Assuming a hospital-cash benefit pays the actual medical invoice

Choose the loss
Separate family support after accidental death from capital needed after permanent disability.
Describe daily risk
Disclose occupation, travel, motorcycling, sport and any verified base-policy or account requirement.
Compare the same injury
Read the percentage payable for a realistic hand, sight or mobility loss—not only the maximum sum.
Inspect extras
Check whether temporary disability, hospital cash, medical expenses or RAF assistance are actually included.
Confirm inception
Keep the issued schedule, first premium and claim contact; a marketing page is not acceptance.
The disability lump-sum versus monthly-income guide helps assign one-off and recurring costs to different benefits.
Claims flow · After an accident
Preserve both the incident and medical story
Get help first
Seek emergency care and preserve the medical and incident record.
Notify promptly
Contact the insurer using the policy number and the required accident-report deadline.
Prove the event
Supply police, employer, witness and medical records where the relevant claim calls for them.
Ask for the scale
Request the assessed disability category, percentage, amount and reasons in writing.
Escalate if needed
Use the insurer's complaint process and then the appropriate ombud route if unresolved.
Also review our general claim checklist; the issued accident policy's deadlines and forms take precedence.
Documents worth keeping ready
- Issued schedule and insured-person list
- Accident date, place and incident report
- Medical records and disability assessment
- Police or employer report if required
- Beneficiary and identity documents for a death claim
For an accidental-death benefit, keep beneficiary instructions findable.
Balanced view
- A defined capital benefit can help after an accident
- Some plans include family or travel extensions
- A specified disability scale makes the percentage test inspectable
Limits
- Illness-based disability needs different cover
- Temporary income and hospital benefits are not universal
- Narrow commuter or package access can be missed in a headline comparison

Questions answered
Frequently asked questions
What does personal accident insurance cover?
It typically pays for qualifying accidental death and specified permanent disablement; temporary disability, hospital cash and other extras depend on the selected policy.
Does it cover sickness or a natural-cause death?
Usually no under the accident benefit. Read the accident definition and consider separate life or income cover for those risks.
Will a broken wrist pay?
Not merely because a fracture occurred. Check whether the policy includes an applicable injury, temporary-disability or hospital benefit and its evidence requirements.
Is hospital cash the same as medical aid?
No. A daily cash benefit is not membership of a registered medical scheme and may not equal treatment costs.
Can a commuter plan cover an accident at home?
Do not assume so. Some plans insure only defined motor-vehicle or commuting events; compare the policy's activity scope.
Does an RAF claim prevent a policy claim?
A private accident policy and the Road Accident Fund have distinct rules. Notify the insurer, disclose other recoveries as required and check the contract rather than assuming either outcome.
Are all listed plans standalone?
No. Some are riders, broker-arranged or retail-channel products. Each record states its access route and legal insurer where verified; ask if an account or base policy is required.
