Compare 15 cellphone & gadget insurance policy records
15 officially sourced cover records from 9 insurers. Some providers sell several materially different cover levels. Read the buying route and device conditions in each record; this is a researched sample, not complete-market coverage.
Individual quotes are required. Advertised entry prices use different device values and cover assumptions, so they are not ranked as comparable prices here. Confirm the current premium, policy wording, limits, excesses, waiting periods and underwriting outcome with the provider.
Rating (1-5) measures source clarity: one point each for insurer identity, covered events, access conditions, an excess method and a claim route. A tick confirms that information in the reviewed sources; it does not confirm your eligibility or an unlimited benefit. This is not a customer rating, insurer-quality score or claims-performance measure. Equal scores use provider and plan name order.

Support signals describe fields in the maintained directory record. “Not shown” means the record does not currently carry that signal; it does not prove the provider lacks the service.
Three ways in
A similar device can have very different buying conditions.
Cellphone and gadget insurance protects the listed hardware after an insured event. Your buying route decides whether a particular product is available to you; its cover level decides which losses it can respond to.
Standalone item cover
Useful when you want to insure one device. Confirm the owner, condition, value and accepted use. A standalone product still has eligibility and evidence requirements.
Network-linked device cover
Check where the device was bought, the enrolment window and required SIM. Changing the handset or using another network can require a policy update. A prepaid or contract label alone does not establish acceptance.
A specified item on a wider policy
Ask what base cover you must hold and what it costs. Budget and King Price publish qualifying-policy requirements. Compare the whole purchase if you would need a new base policy solely to obtain the add-on.
Choose the loss you want covered
“Damage” and “replacement” are separate questions.
Broad cover can include several events, while a cheaper, narrower option can leave theft or liquid damage with you. MTN’s Repair Only wording, for example, excludes liquid damage and offers no replacement when repairs exceed 70% of the insured value.
| What happens? | Broad device cover | Damage-only option | Loss/theft-only option |
|---|---|---|---|
| The phone is stolen | Check theft conditions | No theft benefit | Check theft conditions |
| You accidentally lose it | Check that loss is included | No loss benefit | Only if accidental loss is included |
| You crack the screen in a fall | Damage terms and excess apply | Damage terms and excess apply | Own repair cost |
| Liquid enters the device | Confirm liquid damage | May be included or excluded | Own repair cost |
| The device cannot be repaired | Check replacement basis | Repair-only can leave no replacement | Damage is outside this option |
| A battery wears out | Usually maintenance, not an accident | Check wear and breakdown exclusions | Outside loss/theft cover |

Build a useful quote request
Bring the device facts, not just its brand.
For iPhone insurance, match the exact model and storage. For Samsung Galaxy cover, do the same, including whether the device is a foldable. Ask how an unavailable model would be replaced and who carries out repairs. There is no verified universal premium for either brand.
For laptops and tablets, include professional use, travel and whether the equipment belongs to an employer. Follow the laptop and tablet checks.
| Bring this fact | Ask this question | Keep the answer |
|---|---|---|
| Make, model and storage | Which equivalent device would replace mine? | Settlement basis and insured value |
| Purchase history and condition | Will you accept this used, imported or refurbished unit? | Written acceptance and inspection result |
| IMEI or serial number | Which device and SIM must be used together? | Correct schedule and network conditions |
| Who owns and uses it | Does family, student or work use fit? | Accepted owner and use |
| Repair and total-loss scenarios | What is the full excess in each case? | Basic, percentage, minimum and additional amounts |
| Existing contents or device cover | Can I add it, and how will other insurance affect a claim? | Item listing and duplicate-cover decision |
A device’s original price, current replacement cost and insured amount can differ. Keep the provider’s accepted valuation basis rather than assuming last year’s price is still correct. Use the monthly cost and excess worksheet.
Before the first payment
Get to an accepted policy in four checks
Identify the actual device
Record the exact model, storage, IMEI or serial and its condition. Check who owns it and where it was bought.
Choose events and a buying route
Compare standalone protection, accepted network cover or a specified item on an existing policy. Check which routes you qualify for.
Ask for two claim calculations
Price an ordinary repair and a stolen-device replacement with every excess and limit included.
Check the start confirmation
Keep the accepted schedule, correct identifiers, premium and any inspection or network-use conditions.
Claims flow
Keep recovery, reporting and repair approval together
Secure the device and accounts
For loss or theft, use the network’s blocking process and secure affected accounts. Keep the incident and reference details.
Notify the insurer promptly
Use the named administrator and the policy’s reporting deadlines. Ask before arranging repairs.
Provide evidence and review the decision
Supply the requested ownership and incident evidence. Check the repair or replacement basis and full excess in writing.
Do not assume a claim also settles your airtime agreement, device instalments, lost files or unauthorised transactions. Ask for the hardware settlement and any other loss to be considered under the appropriate contract.
Documents worth keeping ready
- Purchase invoice or accepted alternative ownership evidence
- IMEI or serial number and device model
- Current policy schedule and wording
- Condition photographs or inspection confirmation
- Network blacklist and police references when required
- Claim number, repair assessment and settlement calculation
Keep copies somewhere accessible without the insured phone. AfriPolicyCover does not collect these documents. For a disputed claim, ask the insurer for the decision and wording relied on; the National Financial Ombud explains current non-life complaint assistance.
Questions answered
Frequently asked questions
Can I compare cellphone insurance quotes here?
You can compare sourced policy information and select up to three records. Personalised quote submission is not active. Buy keeps your chosen plan in an on-site next-step state; it does not contact the provider.
Which cellphone insurance is cheapest or best?
There is no verified cheapest policy for every device. Compare monthly premiums with the same phone value, covered events and full excess. An affordable premium can still leave an unaffordable replacement contribution.
Can I insure an iPhone or Samsung Galaxy?
Ask about the exact model, storage, age and condition. Brand alone does not establish acceptance. For an iPhone, Samsung or other handset, confirm the IMEI, replacement standard and repair channel before paying.
Does cellphone insurance cover a cracked screen or water damage?
Only when the selected option covers that event. Damage-only and repair-only cover differ: MTN’s reviewed Repair Only option excludes liquid damage and provides no replacement when repairs exceed its stated threshold. Existing damage is a separate acceptance question, not a new insured accident.
Can I insure a second-hand or refurbished phone?
Acceptance must be checked for the actual device. Keep purchase and ownership evidence, disclose repairs and existing damage, and request any inspection conditions. New-device network products do not establish eligibility for a privately purchased used phone.
Do I need home contents insurance first?
Some products are standalone; others are sections or add-ons. Budget requires a qualifying car, motorcycle or home contents policy for its portable possessions product. King Price also lists a qualifying base-policy requirement. Check this cost before comparing an add-on with standalone cover.
Can I cover a laptop or tablet used for work?
Verify ownership and professional use. Naked’s single-item page expressly describes personal and professional use, but that does not establish the terms of another insurer or acceptance of employer-owned equipment. Device damage and lost business income are different losses.
Will insurance pay off my phone contract?
Do not assume a repair or replacement settles the remaining handset instalments or airtime agreement. Ask the network about continuing charges and the insurer about settlement separately. Keep paying contractual amounts unless the relevant provider confirms a change.

AfriPolicyCover Editorial reviewed this sample on 9 September 2026. Provider brands and legal insurers are counted separately; MTN’s four different cover levels and Vodacom’s two event options explain part of the record count. Device-model names and optional excess reductions have not been counted as extra policies. This is factual comparison information, not personal financial advice or a claim of partnership.
