Motorcycle Insurance Costs and Excesses

A monthly premium tells you what keeping the policy costs. The excess tells you how much cash you may need after a covered loss. Compare both before calling a quote affordable.

R100 less each month can leave a larger claim bill

The following figures are invented arithmetic examples, not insurer prices or an estimate of what you will pay. Both options assume the same accepted rider, bike value, riding use and comprehensive cover. A real comparison must first establish those matches.

R100
monthly saving
12 months
same cover period
R1,200
annual premium saving
Invented example: one covered claim, no additional excess or fees
CostOption AOption B
Monthly premiumR450R550
Twelve premiumsR5,400R6,600
Claim excessR6,000R3,000
Premiums plus one excessR11,400R9,600

Without a claim, A costs R1,200 less in this example. With one eligible claim large enough for the full excess to apply, B costs R1,800 less across the illustrated year. This does not predict a claim or prove which option you should buy. It reveals a cash requirement that the monthly comparison alone hides.

Ask whether you could pay the higher excess when the motorcycle is unavailable. Your emergency reserve may also need to cover replacement transport, storage that was not authorised, or equipment outside the policy. Do not treat money reserved for next month’s premium as money freely available for a claim.

Read the formula, not just the rand figure

An excess can be fixed, percentage-based, subject to a minimum, or combined with additional event or rider conditions. MiWay’s reviewed motorcycle page publishes a standard excess of 10% of the claim with a R3,500 minimum. Confirm whether other amounts apply to your own quote before using that figure.

For an arithmetic illustration of that formula alone, 10% of R20,000 is R2,000, so the R3,500 minimum is larger. On R80,000, 10% is R8,000. These calculations do not establish the amount of an accepted claim, the valuation basis or a final payment. Ask the provider which figure the percentage is applied to.

Get two written examples: ordinary repair damage and theft or total loss. A quote can look manageable on small repairs while leaving a much larger deduction when the entire bike is lost. If your bike is financed, request a separate calculation showing payment to the lender and any remaining balance.

How do I compare cheap motorbike insurance?

A lower premium is useful when the protection still fits and the retained loss is affordable. Start by correcting inaccurate details, removing unwanted optional benefits and requesting alternative excess structures. Never lower a price by describing delivery work as commuting or naming a more experienced person who is not the actual rider.

Keep the dated quote, excess schedule, value basis and equipment endorsement. At renewal, compare the revised terms against those documents. A premium change on its own cannot tell you whether the cover became better or worse.

How much is motorcycle insurance per month?

There is no single verified monthly premium for this sample. A provider needs the bike, value, rider, licence, use, parking and requested cover before it can price your risk. Our records therefore show “Quote required”. The figures above explain arithmetic and are not a market average or a motorcycle insurance quote.

Can an annual payment make insurance cheaper?

Ask for the total annual cost of both payment options, including fees and optional benefits. Then check cancellation and refund terms. A lower annual total may still be impractical if paying it upfront leaves you unable to fund an excess. Do not assume a discount exists until the provider confirms it.

Should I always choose the lowest excess?

Compare its premium cost and the loss you can carry. A lower excess may improve claim-time affordability, but it does not remove exclusions or guarantee a claim.
