Motorcycle Insurance for New Riders

Before collecting a first motorcycle, confirm the rider, the bike and the moment cover starts. A successful quote request is not the same as an accepted policy.

Five checks before you ride away

  1. Name the person who will actually ride

If a parent pays the premium but you use the bike, describe that arrangement accurately. Ask whether cover follows a named rider, a regular rider, or another accepted arrangement. Do not list a more experienced person solely to obtain a lower premium. Record how another rider can be authorised before lending the motorcycle or asking someone to collect it.

  2. Put the exact licence circumstances on the application

Tell the insurer whether you hold a learner’s or full licence, and supply the details it requires. Ask about licence category, validity, endorsements and passenger conditions. Acceptance by one insurer does not establish acceptance by another. If a licence changes after purchase, ask whether the schedule and premium need updating.

  3. Match the machine to the quote

Confirm registration details, model, engine size, value and modifications. A road motorcycle, scooter, quad and off-road machine are not interchangeable descriptions. Keep the purchase invoice and photographs of existing condition. Include luggage, accessories and protective equipment in the discussion rather than assuming the motorcycle value includes everything.

  4. Finish inspections and security requirements

Ask whether an inspection, tracker installation or other condition must be completed before particular cover operates. Obtain the insurer’s explanation of what applies while a requirement is outstanding. Keep proof of completion and check that the insurer has recorded it. A dealer saying the bike is ready does not settle the insurer’s separate conditions.

  5. Verify the start date and payment arrangements

Read the accepted schedule before collection. Check the effective date and time, payment obligations, insured value, excess and claim contacts. If collection changes, confirm whether the insurance must change as well. Keep the documents somewhere accessible if the phone normally carried on the bike is damaged or stolen.

Can I insure a motorbike with a learner’s licence?

King Price’s published motorcycle FAQ accepts a valid South African learner’s licence subject to its rules and states that a learner carrying a passenger is not covered for that incident. Use this as an example of why eligibility is more detailed than a yes-or-no answer. Read the current wording for your actual circumstances.

Handover example: the friend who offers to help

Imagine Naledi buys her first bike and asks an experienced friend to ride it home. Her quote names only Naledi. The friend’s experience does not itself extend that policy. The useful next step is to ask the insurer about this specific collection journey before it happens.

If written approval is given, keep its scope and dates. If approval is not given, arrange an accepted alternative, such as an appropriately agreed delivery or collection arrangement. This example does not establish whether a particular transport service is insured; that also needs checking.

The lesson is practical: resolve the real handover plan while there is time to change it. Do not wait until the bike is outside the dealership to discover who can ride under the policy.

Keep a small first-month review list

Changes that deserve a fresh insurance check
What changes?Why revisit it?
New overnight parkingThe insurer’s recorded risk details may no longer be accurate
Work or delivery journeysThe accepted private-use description may no longer fit
Another regular riderThe original rider arrangement may not apply
New exhaust, luggage or helmetDeclared value and equipment benefits may need updating
Licence or finance changesEligibility, policy records or the settlement recipient may change

What about a young rider or a 125cc motorcycle?

State the rider’s actual age, licence and experience alongside the exact bike. A 125cc engine or an experienced person paying the premium does not establish the rider’s acceptance. Ask whether any age, experience or licence-related excess applies and get the accepted conditions in writing. This guide does not confirm the legal riding entitlement of any particular licence.

Will a cheaper bike always mean cheaper insurance?

Do not assume so. The provider assesses the whole risk, including the machine, rider, use and conditions. Compare actual quotes with consistent facts.

What should I do after my first accident?

Prioritise safety, use the insurer’s claim and approved towing instructions, and keep incident photographs and damaged gear. Ask for the claim reference and excess calculation; do not authorise repairs without checking the process.

Can this checklist confirm that I am insured?

No. Only the accepted policy and provider confirmation can establish your cover. This checklist helps you find unresolved questions before riding.
