Budget for the month and the claim · South Africa
What will your phone cover cost to keep—and to use?
A useful cellphone insurance budget has three numbers: regular premiums, cash available for a claim, and the value used to replace the device. Check each before calling a policy affordable.
How much is cellphone insurance per month?
The provider needs more than “an iPhone”.
The exact handset, storage, replacement value, condition, selected events and excess all matter. Our directory has no comparable universal monthly price: request a device-specific quote. An advertised “from” premium can concern a low-value device or narrower protection than you need.
Keep the policy premium separate from handset instalments and airtime. Paying an insurance premium does not establish that the outstanding phone contract will be settled after theft.
- Every month
- Premium + any separate fees or compulsory base-policy cost
- When you claim
- Full excess + uninsured costs you must fund
- When the device changes
- Recheck its identity, value and accepted replacement basis
Read the quote like a receipt
For an add-on, determine whether you already have the qualifying policy. The incremental device premium is useful for an existing customer; a new buyer also needs the price of any base cover they must purchase.
| Quote line | What to establish | Keep with the quote |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly device premium | The charge for this item and selected events | Insured model, value and cover option |
| Other required cover | Whether a base policy must be bought or retained | Total package cost and cancellation effect |
| Excess | The contribution for repair and total loss | Formula, minimum and additional excesses |
| Optional excess reduction | Which part of the excess actually reduces | Extra premium and remaining contribution |
| Fees or service benefits | Whether they are compulsory, separate or optional | Annual total with the same selections |
| Insured value | How an equivalent device is valued at claim time | Schedule and settlement wording |
Worked calculation
A percentage excess needs a value and a minimum.
MTN’s reviewed Mobile All Risk wording describes a first total-loss excess of 10% of device value, with a R300 minimum, and an additional R300 for claims lodged within 60 days of inception. Other repeat-claim amounts and optional excess reduction need separate checks.
For a hypothetical R18,000 device, the basic calculation is R1,800. If that early-claim addition applies, the illustrated contribution becomes R2,100. This is arithmetic using the stated rule, not a claim approval or a personal quote; confirm which device value and additions apply to your schedule.
Keep these figures separate
- Assumed device value
- R18,000
- 10% basic contribution
- R1,800
- Illustrated early-claim addition
- R300
- Illustrated total
- R2,100
The premium is a different payment.
Comparing cheap phone insurance without losing the protection you need
Begin with accepted cover for the same device and events. Then compare the annual premium commitment and a claim you could realistically fund. A lower price obtained by removing theft cover answers a different question from a lower price for the same protection.
| Possible change | Check before accepting | Cost you may retain |
|---|---|---|
| Increase the excess | How much premium does it save? | A larger immediate claim contribution |
| Choose damage-only | Could you replace a stolen or lost device yourself? | Whole replacement outside the selected events |
| Choose repair-only | What happens if repair is uneconomical? | Replacement may be entirely yours |
| Add to existing insurance | Is the item accepted, specified and covered outside? | Different excess or package dependence |
| Remove an optional benefit | Would you use or need it? | The benefit you deliberately give up |
For monthly budgeting only, an invented R120 premium means R1,440 over twelve unchanged payments. Do not add an excess to that as if a claim were certain. Instead ask whether your separate emergency reserve could pay the excess if a covered event occurred.
Check the events behind a narrower premium before deciding which risk to carry yourself.

Reopen the receipt at renewal
Review after a premium change, upgrade, replacement, ownership transfer or change of network. Compare the new schedule with the old one: premium, value, excess, events and conditions. A lower retail price does not automatically mean the insurer has revised your insured amount.
Ask how cancelling affects the end date and any linked policy. Keep written confirmation and avoid assuming an application elsewhere has already started cover. If the new phone was bought used, first complete the condition and ownership checks.
Common cost questions
Who has the cheapest cellphone insurance?
Our sources do not establish a universal cheapest provider. Obtain quotes for the same device value, events and excess, including any required base-policy cost.
Does a low premium mean a low excess?
No. They are separate amounts. Ask for the repair excess and the total-loss excess, with any minimum or additional contribution.
Is an iPhone more expensive to insure than a Samsung?
Brand alone cannot answer that. Compare the exact models and storage capacities on the same cover basis; their accepted replacement values and terms matter.
Should I pay annually?
Ask whether that option exists, then compare the full cost and cancellation terms. Keep enough accessible money for an excess after paying upfront.
Can I insure the phone for less to save money?
Ask what valuation basis the insurer requires and how underinsurance would affect settlement. Deliberately reducing the amount can leave part of a covered loss unpaid.
Is insurance worth it for an older phone?
Compare its accepted replacement value with the premium, excess and the loss you can afford yourself. Age alone does not establish either acceptance or good value.
