Start with what happened · South Africa
A stolen phone, a lost phone and a broken screen are different claims.
Start with the event. Then check whether the cover option includes it, which evidence is needed and who must approve the repair or replacement.
Use the route that matches the incident
Theft
Get to safety, secure affected accounts and contact your network about blocking the device and SIM. Record when and where the phone was taken. Follow the insurer’s police-report and notification requirements.
Accidental loss
Record the last known location and reasonable recovery steps. Check for a loss benefit: a theft-only description does not automatically include misplacement. Report the facts accurately without describing a loss as theft.
Physical damage
Keep the damaged device and photographs of its condition. Ask for approved assessment instructions before arranging repairs. A cracked screen, liquid exposure and mechanical failure can have different outcomes.
Read the insured event before the benefit limit
A large maximum benefit is useful only if the event qualifies. “All risk” also has exclusions and conditions; it does not mean every possible loss will be paid.
| Incident | Look for | Check carefully |
|---|---|---|
| Phone stolen from your bag | A theft benefit | Reporting deadlines and device identity |
| Phone left behind and not recovered | Accidental-loss cover | Unattended-item and loss conditions |
| Screen breaks after a fall | Accidental physical damage | Repair excess and approved assessment |
| Water damages the electronics | Liquid-damage acceptance | Repair-only exclusions and gradual damage |
| Device taken from a parked car | Theft plus vehicle conditions | Concealment, locking and required entry evidence |
| Battery capacity declines over time | Any applicable warranty or service terms | Wear and breakdown exclusions in insurance |
Vodacom’s reviewed damage option advertises replacement if repair is impossible. MTN’s Repair Only option expressly leaves an uneconomical repair without replacement and excludes liquid damage. Ask for the actual option name rather than assuming all screen-damage protection works alike.
Keep a record beyond the lost phone
Build the claim file in three parts
The device
Find its invoice or accepted ownership evidence, IMEI or serial, exact model and policy schedule. Match these against the claimed item.
The incident
Record the date, location and circumstances. Keep photographs, police and network references when applicable, and any security evidence requested.
The instructions
Keep the claim reference, notification date and approved repair or collection instructions. Store correspondence and the excess calculation together.
Deadlines vary. MTN’s reviewed wording includes 48-hour police reporting for a stolen or lost device and a 30-day claim-information requirement. Pineapple’s published wording asks for SAPS notification within 24 hours for loss or theft. Read your own contract promptly; do not use one provider’s deadline for another.

What happens after the assessment?
Imagine a tablet with an insured amount of R10,000 and an authorised repair assessment of R8,000. Under a hypothetical repair-only contract that stops covering repairs above 70% of insured value, the R7,000 threshold would be exceeded. There may be no repair or replacement benefit. These are invented device and repair values illustrating why the threshold matters, not a claim decision.
| Decision | Confirm | Keep |
|---|---|---|
| Repair approved | Repairer, excess and authorised work | Assessment and approval reference |
| Replacement approved | Equivalent model, specifications and condition | Replacement offer and value basis |
| Cash offered | Whether the wording permits it and all deductions | Full written calculation |
| Item is uneconomical to repair | Whether this cover includes replacement | Threshold and applicable cover section |
| Another policy covers the device | How insurers share the same loss | Details supplied to both insurers |
| Claim declined | The exact exclusion, condition and facts relied on | Reasons and complaint instructions |
A replacement phone does not automatically recover photographs, pay business downtime or settle unauthorised bank transactions. Secure accounts and raise those losses through the appropriate bank, network or separately applicable cover.
If the explanation does not match your policy
Ask the insurer or administrator to identify the wording version, clause, factual reason and calculation behind the decision. Send a clear account with the evidence already supplied, and keep a dated record of the response.
The National Financial Ombud’s non-life FAQs explain complaint assistance and scope. They recommend attempting resolution with the insurer and explain that a prior insurer complaint is not compulsory for non-life complaints. Check current submission requirements and any time limits that apply to your case. AfriPolicyCover cannot decide a claim.
Questions after damage or theft
Can I insure a phone after it has been stolen?
A new policy does not insure a loss that already happened. Check whether an existing policy covered the item at the time and report the facts to that provider.
Will a new policy repair an already cracked screen?
Do not assume so. Disclose the damage before applying and obtain the insurer’s acceptance conditions. Future accidental-damage cover does not establish payment for an existing crack.
Is accidental loss the same as theft?
No. Loss can include accidental misplacement; theft involves the device being taken. The chosen option must cover the actual event.
Can I choose any repair shop?
Check the claims instructions first. An unauthorised repair may affect assessment or payment, and the insurer may require a particular repair channel.
Does waterproof advertising guarantee insurance cover?
No. A device specification does not determine the policy’s liquid-damage benefit. Read the insured event, exclusions and assessment conditions.
Can I claim the full amount from two insurers?
Disclose other cover. The reviewed MTN and Pineapple terms provide for sharing a covered loss; two policies do not create an entitlement to two full device settlements.
