Kenya · the family handover
Know what arrives before the family needs it
Make a one-page handoverA funeral policy may pay cash, arrange named services or add an early payment to a life or employer benefit. The important question is what a particular family can use, in which place, and from which date.
Owner-approved editorial edition · no quote, family-record form or insurer handoff.

01 · Make it usable
Leave a short instruction the organiser can actually follow
Ask the person likely to coordinate where arrangements would happen and which tasks need money first. Keep the current schedule and claims route accessible to them, but share identity or death records only with a verified insurer or official channel. A funeral service network is not the same as cash in a bank account.
| Record | Write down | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Covered person | Exact accepted name, relationship, age band and policy or group number. | “Family” on a brochure does not enrol a parent or another relative. |
| Benefit | Cash amount, service list or funeral add-on and the eligible claimant. | A provider may arrange items instead of reimbursing the organiser. |
| Place | Expected funeral location, supplier area, transport and cross-border terms. | A service network or repatriation promise can have geographic limits. |
| First call | Insurer-verified claims contact, notice deadline, reference and initial documents. | A family should not rely on an unverified intermediary during an urgent claim. |
The NSSF benefits page lists a survivors benefit with its own member, dependant and application rules. It does not list a funeral grant. Do not put a presumed NSSF funeral payment into the immediate budget or count it as a private policy.
Not every relative has the same promise
Ask who stays covered after the first claim
Before comparing a contribution, write a separate line for the principal, spouse, children and each parent. These selected insurer summaries show why the same headline amount can mean different things. They were revisited on 16 October 2026; none replaces current wording and the selected family schedule.
| Family route | Published distinction | Put in the handover |
|---|---|---|
| Absa · Absa Life Kenya company homepage | Page 2 scales children's benefits against the policyholder's sum by age: 100% at 14+, 50% at 7–13, 25% at 1–6 and 10% below one, including stillbirth. | Record each child's accepted age band, not one identical family amount. |
| Prudential · Prudential company homepage | The main member and spouse have the full selected funeral benefit; included children, parents and wider relatives have half. | Record the actual amount for each relative. A parent does not inherit the principal's headline amount. |
| CIC · CIC company homepage | Five-year shared first-death cover includes four children under 18 and two parents in total, whether parents or in-laws. | Name the two parents selected. Do not assume all four parents or a fresh benefit after every death. |
| Kenindia · Kenindia company homepage | After the principal dies, the page says premiums are waived for the spouse and up to four children through the remaining term; parents' and in-laws' cover ends. | Plan replacement cover for parents separately. The page also caps claims at five per policy year; confirm the remaining entitlement. |
02 · Ten distinct insurer descriptions, different eligibility lanes
Read the product role before comparing a headline
These are ten first-party product descriptions from ten distinct legal insurers named in the IRA notice dated 30 March 2026. Six are individual or family routes; Madison introduces a group package but also labels options for individuals/families; Jubilee and Equity are explicit group routes; GA is an employer group-life component. Madison's heading does not establish direct retail eligibility. The notice shows classes 31 and/or 34 for these entities on that date; it does not prove present-day authorisation. On 16 October the PDF URL and directory returned verification HTML, so the dated identity baseline was not refreshed. A bank or funeral home distributing cover is not automatically its underwriter.
| Legal insurer · public route | What the source actually describes | Unresolved before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| ABSA Life Assurance Kenya Limited Absa Life Kenya company homepage · family | Whole-of-life death cover presented for funeral costs, with extended-family inclusion and a nominated recipient. | Each accepted relative, waiting and benefit amount; the webpage is not a family schedule. |
| Prudential Life Assurance Kenya Limited Prudential company homepage · family | Whole-of-life family cash; the public page shows full benefit for main member or spouse and half for other included family. | Selected plan, included lives and its published six-month natural-death wait for start or reinstatement. |
| CIC Life Assurance Limited CIC company homepage · family | Five-year shared cover paying on the first death of a declared family member, with specified children and parent places. | First-claim effect, declared names, parent allocation, renewal and dated benefit. |
| Liberty Life Assurance Kenya Limited Heritage company homepage · individual/family | Individual or family funeral packages with optional parent cover on an insurer-hosted page. | The 16 October HTTPS check reached the lowercase product URL with 200, replacing the earlier 403 observation. Placeholder calculator copy remains; it is not a quote or benefit projection. |
| Pioneer Assurance Company Limited Pioneer Assurance company homepage · family research | Its funeral paragraph describes annual first-death cover and a three-month natural-death wait, but other sections describe endowment and savings benefits. | Obtain consistent current wording before relying on its product classification, contribution or payout stages; the mixed claims are not accepted terms. |
| Kenindia Assurance Company Limited Kenindia company homepage · family | Standalone funeral-expense cover; its page gives a six-month wait for principal, spouse and children and twelve months for parents, with accident exceptions. | Selected term, accepted people, benefit, premium and how claim limits work. |
| Madison Life Assurance Kenya Limited Madison company homepage · group-led; retail eligibility unresolved | A group introduction, individuals/families option heading, 90-day non-accidental wait and separate service package. | Membership and exact option; the direct 16 October GET timed out. Indexed issuer text is research, not an issued offer. |
| Jubilee Life Insurance Limited Jubilee company homepage · group | Fixed-amount group benefit for a registered entity with at least 20 main members, including stated dependant classes. | Scheme membership and certificate. Its “no waiting period” headline is group-product-specific, not a market rule. |
| Equity Life Assurance (Kenya) Limited Equity Insurance Group company homepage · group | Insurer-group site describes a group, sacco or employer route from five members, with a defined dependant list. | Issuer and selected scheme certificate. The 16 October GET completed with certificate validation; the earlier TLS failure is historical, not a current access result. |
| GA Life Assurance Limited GA Kenya company homepage · employer add-on | An employer group-life death-in-service plan that can include a funeral-expense component, possibly accelerated. | Whether the employer selected it, whether it reduces later death cover, and job-exit date. Not standalone retail funeral cover. |
Publication boundary: the 16 October sweep retrieved nine of ten product pages directly; Madison timed out. Two additional IRA responses were verification HTML, not substantive register evidence. These ten descriptions establish zero complete, accepted, like-for-like household funeral policies and zero matched KSh household quotes. They are not a ranked catalogue or a live buying route. Recheck the current IRA directory and exact issuer before paying.
Conflicting product copy: Pioneer's page combines renewable funeral-cover wording with maturity, savings and policy-loan claims. Those claims are not confirmed funeral benefits here. Ask the issuer for the governing product document; do not plan on an investment return, loan or maturity payment from this page.
03 · What arrives?
Cash, a booked service and a life add-on solve different problems
Ask whether the family receives unrestricted cash, a supplier booking or a defined early amount under another contract. Madison’s page illustrates both group cash and a service package; that does not mean both are automatically on one member’s certificate. CIC Family Life pays on the first declared death, unlike a plan that pays for multiple qualifying deaths. A service promise must specify substitutions if the chosen funeral home or destination is unavailable.
| Route | Ask the issuer to confirm | Family consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Cash | Amount by person, recipient, claim proof and whether payment is for each death or the first qualifying death. | The family chooses suppliers and must fund any balance while waiting for a valid claim. |
| Arranged service | Funeral home, area, mortuary, casket, transport, substitutions and any cash alternative. | A listed benefit value is not necessarily cash paid to a relative. |
| Life-policy add-on | Whether funeral cash is additional to, or advanced from, the main death benefit. | An early amount may change what remains for longer-term living costs. |
| Employer or association | Eligible group, accepted dependants, member certificate and when membership ends. | The route may end or change with work or membership even if a brochure remains online. |
04 · Dates for each insured person
A policy anniversary is not a parent’s start date
Record when the principal, spouse, child and each parent were accepted, when premium was received, and when any new or increased benefit starts. Prudential and Kenindia publish different natural-death waits; Pioneer publishes another; Jubilee’s no-wait group headline belongs only to its described scheme. None overrides the schedule issued for a particular family.
Read the small calendar
Put event, start and reset terms on one line
| Moment | Find in accepted wording | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| First payment | Application acceptance, effective date and receipt for each life. | A payment instruction alone proves insurance began. |
| Natural death | Wait by person, cause and added or increased benefit. | The principal’s elapsed wait covers a parent added later. |
| Absa parent option | The linked brochure shows premium refund in months 0–4 for all listed categories. In months 5–12 it shows full benefit for rider parents, but refund for standalone parents; full benefit for both after month 12. | Rider and standalone parent cover have identical early natural-death benefits. Confirm the current selected option. |
| Accident | Accident definition, exclusions and proof such as a police report if required. | “No wait” means no other condition or exclusion. |
| Lapse or renewal | Grace, missed contribution, reinstatement and changed membership. | A former certificate proves continuous cover. |
Check the price denominator
Per person, per family and check-off are not interchangeable
Madison's Madison company homepage illustrates the distinction below. Direct retrieval timed out, so these are published research examples, not current accepted premiums or a market ranking. Do not multiply a monthly figure into a supposedly equivalent annual offer.
| Example | Published amount and basis | Question before comparing |
|---|---|---|
| Lala Salama cash only · KSh 100,000 | KSh 1,375 annually per person; KSh 139 monthly for check-off payments only. | Can this applicant use check-off, and which lives are priced? |
| Lala Salama combined option | KSh 100,000 funeral, KSh 100,000 TPD and KSh 50,000 critical illness: KSh 2,280 annually per person, or KSh 230 monthly, check-off only. | Confirm definitions and interaction of the benefits; this is not cash-only cover. |
| Montezuma service package | A separate supplier package; its table does not establish the premium period. | Obtain period, age basis, area and services. Do not label its value as cash. |
| Your family comparison | Quote required for the same named lives, cover form, period and selected benefits. | Include charges and payment conditions; keep an unmatched example out of a cheapest-price sort. |
05 · Invented arithmetic, not local prices
Test a KSh 160,000 family plan without counting the same promise twice
The amounts below are fictional planning placeholders, not Nairobi, county or insurer prices. Obtain local supplier estimates for the intended place and date. If a valid policy later pays a full KSh 100,000 cash benefit, the illustrative unfunded balance is KSh 60,000; if it arranges services instead, subtract only the costs it actually covers.
| Task | Illustrative KSh | Question for a policy |
|---|---|---|
| Mortuary and preparation | 45,000 | Booked service, cash reimbursement or excluded? |
| Transport | 35,000 | Which route, vehicle, area and border? |
| Burial or ceremony | 45,000 | Which supplier items and substitutions? |
| Venue and gathering | 20,000 | Household cash need or named service? |
| Contingency | 15,000 | What remains outside the benefit? |
| Total | 160,000 | Confirm when money or service can actually arrive. |
06 · First call and written trail
Agree the claim route while the policyholder can still explain it
- Find the current certificate.
Keep policy number, schedule, covered-person list and payment record together.
- Call a verified channel.
Ask the issuer for notice timing, service booking or cash-claim steps and a reference.
- Send only requested proof.
Death or burial records, ID, relationship and cause evidence may differ by insurer and event.
- Keep the written outcome.
Request reasons and calculation for any shortfall or refusal, then use the IRA complaint route with the insurer’s response.
Keep private identity and death records off this site. The ODPC privacy guidance is a useful official starting point; AfriPolicyCover collects no claim or family documents here. Cross-border transport, repatriation and registration may require additional official and supplier steps, so do not infer them from a general funeral-benefit title.
Separate the notice deadline from the payment clock
Notify promptly rather than waiting for the entire file. Ask which documents begin assessment, which release an initial payment, and which complete settlement. These source-specific requirements are not one universal Kenyan checklist.
| Source | Published requirement | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Absa Family Protection brochure · page 1 | Immediate written notice, with claims reported within 180 days of the event. | Permission to delay notice or a guaranteed settlement date. |
| CIC · CIC company homepage | For Family Life/Last Expense, requirements 1–6: beneficiary and policyholder ID, burial permit, identity certificate, attending-physician certificate, and police abstract if accidental. | The longer general life checklist automatically applies. CIC may request further evidence. |
| CIC · CIC company homepage | The same funeral subset, with copies certified by a CIC Branch Administrator; further documents may be sought. | An exemption from medical evidence; the attending-physician certificate remains listed. Confirm the current form directly. |
| Kenindia Nguzo ya Jamii page | Written cause/date notice, burial permit and deceased's identity document; the stated 48 hours begins on full documentation. | Payment 48 hours after death regardless of the claim file or accepted terms. |
Funeral-cover questions in Kenya
Are these ten plans I can buy as a household today?
No. The descriptions mix family, group-led, explicit group and employer routes, and Pioneer's product copy is internally inconsistent. None is a complete accepted comparable household policy or matched KSh quote.
Is an arranged funeral service the same as cash?
No. Check the supplier, location, items, limits, substitutions and any written cash alternative. A service value is not automatically a bank payment.
Can I add a parent or extended relative?
Only where the selected product and accepted schedule allow that relationship and age. Ask when that person’s own cover and waiting period begin.
Does funeral cover pay after every family death?
Not necessarily. CIC’s Family Life public page describes shared cover on the first death of a declared family member. Read the exact claim-count and continuation terms of any proposal.
Does Kenindia parent cover continue after the principal dies?
The Nguzo ya Jamii page says parent and in-law cover ceases; continuation with waived premiums is for the spouse and up to four children. Confirm the selected schedule and remaining term.
Is Absa spouse continuation automatic?
Its linked brochure requires the already-insured surviving spouse to elect in writing within three months. Confirm the current continuation terms separately from the claim-notification deadline.
Does a PRUMemorial parent receive the same amount as the principal?
The published funeral benefit is half for included parents and other relatives, versus full benefit for the main member or spouse. Confirm the selected amount on the schedule.
Can I rely on Heshima Mpango Poa as a savings policy?
Not from the conflicting webpage. Its funeral paragraph and endowment sections describe different promises. Obtain consistent insurer-issued terms before assuming maturity proceeds, investment returns or a policy loan.
Is Madison's monthly price available to everyone?
The published monthly column is check-off only, while annual prices are per person. Confirm eligibility and a current written offer; neither is a verified whole-family premium here.
Does CIC require every item on its general death-claim list for funeral cover?
Its current guidance and linked form identify requirements 1–6 for Family Life/Last Expense. The form requires certified copies and allows further evidence; obtain the applicable checklist directly.
Is there always a six-month waiting period?
No. Prudential and Kenindia publish particular six-month terms, Pioneer describes three months for natural death, and other products differ. Accident, reinstatement and added-person rules also matter.
Does “48-hour payout” start when death occurs?
Do not assume so. Public issuer statements attach timing to specified claim documentation or stages. Ask for the written trigger, complete evidence list and escalation route.
Can employer funeral cover follow me into a new job?
Not automatically. Check the member certificate, job-exit date, scheme renewal and any conversion option with the employer and legal insurer.
Is NSSF a funeral policy or funeral grant?
No. The current NSSF benefits page lists a survivors benefit with separate eligibility and application records; it does not list a funeral grant. Do not assume immediate funeral cash.
Is repatriation included for a death abroad?
Only if the accepted wording includes the relevant person, journey, destination, service provider and limits. CIC describes a diaspora last-expense route, but it is not a blanket feature of Kenyan family plans.
Should I cancel an existing plan when a new one starts?
First obtain written confirmation of each person’s acceptance, start, waiting-credit treatment, contribution and claim overlap. Do not transfer a waiting period by assumption.
Which funeral insurer is cheapest in Kenya?
No market-wide cheapest claim is supported here. Family list, age, benefit form, waiting, area, frequency and underwriting change cost. Request dated KSh proposals for the same brief.
Will this page take a death certificate or family details?
No. This editorial page has no claim form, quote request, provider redirect or personal-data collection. Use verified insurer or official channels for sensitive records.
