Gap cover in Kenya

Compare the cover, price basis and claims information in Kenya. Currency: KES. Confirm the accepted wording and individual quote before choosing.

Gap cover comparison

Zero verified products in the supplied Gap Cover research. No placeholder, hospital-cash plan or ordinary medical policy is counted as second-payer gap insurance.

No product records are available in this edition’s comparison panel yet. This is not a finding that no such insurance exists in Kenya. Read the local guidance below.

Kenya buying guidance

Find the unpaid line before you buy another promise.

Trace a short-paid bill

A hospital balance may be a tariff difference, patient share, exhausted limit, unapproved service or disputed charge. None becomes insurable just because it is called a “gap”. Start with the first payer’s written calculation.

01 · Classify the balance

One unpaid amount can contain several decisions

Ask the facility for an itemised invoice and the first payer for its explanation of benefits or equivalent written response. Match each service line to the member, care date, facility, referral, tariff or schedule, approval and amount actually paid. An estimate alone cannot prove that a fund or insurer accepted treatment.

Source gap: no public source proves that a Kenyan “gap cover” contract will pay every residual line. A second payer may require an eligible first claim, reject the same excluded service, pay fixed cash instead of reimbursing a bill, or decline coordination.

02 · Know the first obligation

SHA, employer support and private insurance are different lanes

Kenya’s Social Health Insurance Act permits private insurance alongside the public system. That is not a direction for a private insurer to pay whatever SHA declines. The 2025 healthcare tariff instrument and Parliamentary Library’s 2026 amendment record are source documents, not a member-specific settlement. Ask SHA for the currently applied service rate. The Ministry’s February 2026 regulatory-impact statement described a proposal, not itself an operative tariff.

Public fund

SHA

Confirm member, fund, service, referral, facility contract and accepted tariff. The 5 October Ministry notice described a temporary extension through 14 October 2026; it does not establish a named facility’s status for care after that date. Verify the current contract and service on the care date.

Employment benefit

Employer scheme

Ask who funds an excess bill, whether an insurer underwrites it, which dependants qualify and when work-linked cover ends.

Insurance contract

Private medical

Read the legal issuer, chosen benefits, panel, limits, waits, exclusions, co-pay and coordination clause.

Personal payment

Household cash

Savings or a hospital payment arrangement can fund a remainder, but are not insurance. Keep the receipt and billing reason.

03 · Kenya insurer evidence

Five medical-plan signals, zero verified gap-only contracts

These insurer-owned descriptions of primary medical plans illustrate different reasons a bill can remain. They are not a five-policy gap comparison or ranking. The earlier identity baseline used class 12 (Medical) in the IRA notice dated 30 March 2026. Its direct URL returned HTML verification content on 16 October, so that dated match was not refreshed. Recheck the current insurer directory and issued document before payment. A medical administrator or broker is not automatically the underwriter.

Publication boundary: five insurer descriptions explain where a first medical plan can leave a bill. We established zero complete, current, accepted, comparable Kenyan standalone gap-cover policies and zero matched KSh prices. Neither these five nor the eleven insurer routes on the health-insurance page satisfy the ten-policy release gate. There is no catalogue, ranking, quote, application, provider redirect or public launch.

Source-integrity correction, 16 October: the Pacis Amani Medical row and citation were removed after unrelated gambling content appeared in its product HTML. A clean source or insurer-issued document is needed before reuse; no licensing, solvency or claims finding is inferred.

04 · Fictional arithmetic

KSh 780,000 billed − KSh 540,000 paid = KSh 240,000 to explain

These invented figures are not a SHA tariff, insurer decision or quote. Suppose the first payer actually pays KSh 540,000. The four illustrative residual reasons below sum to KSh 240,000; ask for a separate written reason for each.

05 · Buying test

A second policy needs a second, precise promise

Request two dated KSh written offers for the same member ages, care type, first payer, hospital, service and period. Ask whether the candidate reimburses an eligible first-payer shortfall, pays fixed hospital cash or is another primary plan. Cash need not follow the actual invoice; a second primary plan may prohibit duplicate recovery.

06 · After a short payment

Keep one bill file; send it only through verified payer channels

  1. 01

    Itemise

Get the hospital invoice and receipts, with service, date and amount separated.

  2. 02

    Match

Keep member, referral and authorisation records; ask for the first payer’s calculation.

  3. 03

    Explain

Get the clause or fund rule for each unpaid line and check if a decision is pending.

  4. 04

    Submit

If a genuine second contract exists, follow its claim order and deadline.

  5. 05

    Escalate

Challenge the responsible payer in writing. For unresolved private insurance, confirm IRA’s contact route; a SHA dispute belongs with the public scheme first.

No medical details here. Do not send AfriPolicyCover diagnoses, SHA/member numbers, invoices, discharge papers, phone numbers or claim documents. The ODPC privacy guidance is a separate route for data concerns.

Kenya medical-shortfall questions

Is gap cover a standard SHA benefit?

No. SHA public financing and a private second-payer policy are different arrangements. Ask for the exact fund decision and any separately issued insurer contract.

Does SHA registration mean my whole hospital bill is paid?

No automatic full-bill promise follows. Check the member, service, contracted facility, referral, applied tariff and written patient share.

Are the February 2026 proposed tariffs the current rates?

The regulatory-impact statement described proposed changes. A 2025 tariff notice and 2026 amendment record exist; confirm the currently applied service schedule with SHA.

Can private insurance pay every SHA shortfall?

Only if accepted wording covers that cause, member, facility and treatment and allows the stated payment order. Exclusions and co-pays may remain personal.

Does an employer top-up follow me after I leave work?

Do not assume it does. Ask the scheme owner about the end date, dependants, insurer and continuation options.

Is hospital cash the same as reimbursement?

No. Eligible hospital cash is a fixed benefit; reimbursement depends on accepted expenses and contractual proof.

Does an in-network hospital mean every specialist is covered?

No. Verify the clinician, department, service, date, referral and authorisation—not only the hospital name.

What if my family limit was partly used?

Request a dated utilisation statement and ask if the limit is per member or shared.

What if the invoice seems wrong?

Ask the facility to itemise or correct it, then ask the first payer to recalculate before buying anything else.

Which Kenyan gap-cover insurer is cheapest?

There is no defensible ranking: zero complete accepted comparable standalone gap policies or matched KSh premiums were verified.

Where can I challenge a rejected private claim?

Get written reasons and use the insurer’s complaint process. If unresolved, confirm the Insurance Regulatory Authority’s current route.

Will AfriPolicyCover collect my medical or payment information?

No. This page has no quote form, diagnosis intake, payment, application, reimbursement request or provider redirect.

Before paying: put the member, care date, facility, service, tariff or schedule, amount paid, each unpaid reason and complaint route beside the bill.
