Name the person, payment and purpose
Build a family-cover briefA death benefit for living costs, a lender’s credit-life payment, an employer benefit and a savings plan are four different promises. Start with who would need money, when, and who the contract would pay.
Owner-approved editorial edition · no quote, beneficiary-data form or insurer handoff.

01 · Define the job
Write down the household gap before looking at products
List continuing essentials, school or care dates, and debt balances. Then identify resources actually available to the intended recipient at the relevant time. The NSSF survivor route has its own member, dependant and application conditions; it is not a nominated private-insurance benefit. A funeral amount may meet an immediate cost without replacing months of income.
| Need | Question to answer | Keep in the file |
|---|---|---|
| Income transition | Which essential bills continue, for how many months and for whom? | Household budget, dependants and accessible savings. |
| Loan or mortgage | Who owes the balance and would credit life pay the lender rather than the family? | Latest loan statement, credit-life schedule and assignment. |
| Education or care | What cash is needed on which date, and who can administer it? | Fees or care estimate, age/date and recipient arrangement. |
| Existing benefits | Does employer cover end with the job; is an NSSF survivor eligible? | Employer scheme certificate, NSSF record and conditions. |
Start with the form of payment
Compare four protection designs before comparing premiums
A household needing monthly rent money may not want the same contract as one needing a single debt-settlement amount. These issuer-published distinctions were checked on 16 October. They do not create four accepted offers or add insurers to the research count. Each selected premium remains Quote required.
| Insurer product | Published payment design | Decision it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Absa · Absa Life Kenya company homepage | Whole-life comprehensive and accident-only options differ. The latter describes accidental death and permanent disability, not ordinary illness death. | Select the actual option. The whole-life label does not make an accident-only proposal cover every cause of death. |
| CIC · CIC company homepage | Breadwinner protection over 1–30 years, with optional accident, critical-illness and funeral benefits. The page describes no surrender value. | Do not budget for a savings withdrawal. Its separate Family Life Plan pays a shared first-death benefit; see the funeral-benefit distinction. |
| Britam · Britam company homepage | Income-payment choices are 3, 5 or 10 years; cover-term choices are 5, 10, 15 or 20 years. Published monthly income rises 10% annually. | Request both periods and the payment start. A five-year policy does not automatically promise five years of payments after death. |
| Prudential · Prudential company homepage | Long-term cover is 5–25 years; the short business option is one year. Settling total permanent disability ends later death cover. | Do not add disability and death amounts as independent future payments. The page’s end-of-term lump-sum wording remains unresolved, not a confirmed maturity benefit. |
A fixed monthly premium and a fixed benefit are separate questions. PRUTerm describes level premiums for its long-term option and age/sum-based repricing at short-term renewal; obtain the actual selected schedule, fees and any premium increases before comparing cost.
A start date is not every benefit’s start date
Check the first year and any restart before replacing cover
The same event can produce full cover, a premium refund or no qualifying benefit under different designs. Keep the selected underwriting route, waiting date, exclusions and reinstatement terms together. A summary is not the insurer’s decision on an individual claim.
| Source and event | Published timing | Do not infer |
|---|---|---|
| Absa Ultimate Protector · non-accidental event | The linked brochure gives 12 months for non-accidental death, disability and critical illness, with a premium-refund outcome. It describes no wait for the listed accidental events. | A refund is not the full sum insured. Confirm the selected comprehensive/accidental option and current terms; the brochure is undated. |
| Britam Family Income · no medical tests | The Britam company homepage limits its first-12-month premium refund to non-accidental death. The July 2026 brochure says death without that qualification. | The first-year accidental-death outcome needs written clarification. Neither source settles it merely by omitting the other’s wording. |
| Prudential PRUTerm · natural-cause event | The page states six months at inception/reinstatement and a separate 14-day survival requirement for a listed critical-illness claim. | Those are different tests. Confirm the selected rider, renewal and benefit-increase rules; do not treat diagnosis alone as immediate payment. |
| CIC Family Protector · continuity | The public summary does not supply a complete waiting, grace or reinstatement schedule. | Missing wording is not a zero-day wait. Request the actual acceptance and restart rules before allowing existing cover to lapse. |
Premium due is another clock: Britam publishes a 30-day grace period and lapse if payment is not received in that period. This is not a market-wide rule or permission to assume cover survives missed payments. Check reinstatement and any new waiting period with the issuer before relying on a restarted policy.
02 · Kenya insurer evidence
Ten published routes, not ten interchangeable policies
The IRA notice dated 30 March 2026 names the ten distinct legal insurers below in long-term business: nine have class 31 (Life Assurance) for the individual product signals and GA Life has class 34 (Group Life) for its employer route. Its direct URL returned HTML verification content on 16 October; that did not refresh the dated class match. These are insurer-owned descriptions, not purchase-day authorisation, accepted contracts or a ranked shortlist. Several are savings-linked and one is not retail household cover.
| Legal insurer · product page | Published payment design | Before it can answer the brief |
|---|---|---|
| ABSA Life Assurance Kenya Limited · Absa Life Kenya company homepage | Whole-of-life death protection with disability, critical-illness and accident benefits. | Obtain the base death amount, benefit interaction, age conditions and accepted schedule. |
| CIC Life Assurance Limited · CIC company homepage | Breadwinner term protection, with optional accident, critical-illness and funeral benefits. | Choose the term and sum; check riders, recipient and any loan assignment. |
| Britam Life Assurance Company (K) Limited · Britam company homepage | Monthly family income after death; its no-medical route has a different first-year death outcome. | Ask for the income schedule, medical route, first-year rule, term and lapse terms. |
| Prudential Life Assurance Kenya Limited · Prudential company homepage | Term death protection with disability and optional critical-illness routes; a settled disability claim can end later death cover. | Reconcile the page’s conflicting end-of-term wording with issued terms, waiting rule and assignment. |
| Pioneer Assurance Company Limited · Pioneer Assurance company homepage | Fixed sum on death or total permanent disability within the selected term; described as without-profit. | Request term, disability definition, underwriting and claim conditions; the page is sparse. |
| Jubilee Life Insurance Limited · Jubilee company homepage | Survival instalments and maturity value alongside a death benefit; not pure term cover. | Separate guaranteed survival/death amounts from bonuses, surrender and loan effects. |
| Kenindia Assurance Company Limited · Kenindia company homepage | Single-deposit child-beneficiary plan with limited child life cover and optional parent life cover. | Separate deposited value, variable returns and each insured life; its 2022 rate is historical. |
| Liberty Life Assurance Kenya Limited · Heritage company homepage | Investment/protection over 5–20 years; maturity as a lump sum or four equal instalments. The earlier HTTP 403 was followed by a redirected HTTP 200 on 16 October. | Confirm selected values, exit terms and premium period. A KSh 5,000 minimum without a stated period is not a verified monthly price. |
| ICEA LION Life Assurance Company Limited · ICEA LION company homepage | Savings-oriented life plan with periodic partial payouts; not a term-life substitute. | Confirm the exact issuing entity, death amount, payout dates and access terms. |
| GA Life Assurance Limited · GA Kenya company homepage | Employer death-in-service route, commonly using a salary multiple; not an individual family purchase. | Ask the employer for active membership, benefit scale and leaving-employment rule. |
Publication boundary: the ten heterogeneous descriptions establish zero complete, currently accepted, comparable household life-policy files or matched KSh quotes. Direct access results are dated source observations, not current contract or licence approval; Liberty remains qualified by its source-access note. No active catalogue, “cheapest” claim, quote form or provider handoff is available. Recheck the legal issuer and permitted class in the current IRA directory before payment. A bank, agent or employer is not automatically the underwriter.
03 · Compare the promise, not the label
Put the same event, person and period in each written request
Death and living benefits
Ask whether death pays capital or income. Disability or critical-illness payments may be extra, deducted from death cover, or end it. Prudential’s PRUTerm public page requires reconciliation on end-of-term wording; do not infer a maturity payout from a term label.
Time and continuity
Record start, waiting rules, premium frequency, grace, lapse, reinstatement and expiry. Britam’s Family Income page describes a different first-year outcome without medical tests; that is not a market-wide rule.
Saving and price
For Triplex, Capital Advantage, Secure Plan or Lioness, keep death cover, deposits, survival or maturity value, bonus, charges and early exit on separate lines. Request a dated KSh illustration for the same insured life and term.
| Field | Write down | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Event and amount | Death, disability or illness definition; capital or monthly formula. | A living-benefit payment may reduce or end later cover. |
| People and payee | Owner, insured life, nominated recipient and any lender assignment. | The payer may settle a loan or employer obligation before family cash. |
| Time | Start, waiting, term, grace, lapse, renewal and reinstatement. | Cover must be effective for the particular event date. |
| Money in and out | Dated KSh premium, fees, guaranteed benefit, projection, surrender and maturity value. | Savings value is not automatically the death benefit. |
Survival, maturity and early exit
Triplex’s staged payments are not a term-policy cash refund
Jubilee company homepage publishes 25% of the sum assured at each of the first two thirds of the term, then 50% plus accrued bonuses at maturity. Its death description retains the full sum assured plus accrued bonuses regardless of prior survival payments. Those are different triggers, not four amounts payable together.
| Event | Illustrative calculation | Keep separate |
|---|---|---|
| Survival to year 4 | 25% × KSh 1,000,000 = KSh 250,000. | Requires the relevant in-force survival conditions; not a freely withdrawable savings balance. |
| Survival to year 8 | A second 25% = KSh 250,000. | Another scheduled survival event, not a new independent life policy. |
| Maturity at year 12 | Remaining 50% = KSh 500,000, plus applicable accrued bonuses. | No bonus amount, investment yield or matched premium is verified here. |
| Death during the term | The published base is the full KSh 1,000,000 plus accrued bonuses, regardless of earlier survival payments. | A death claim is not also a promise of all future survival/maturity instalments. Obtain the selected wording and loan/assignment effects. |
The issuer describes cash and paid-up value only after three full years’ premiums and three years in force. That is not a promise to refund every premium on early exit. Request actual year-by-year surrender and paid-up values, charges and any policy-loan effect. This example supplies no total premium or investment-return calculation.
Four instalments can mean something else: Liberty’s Secure Plan describes a lump sum or four equal payments at maturity, not Triplex’s staged survival percentages. Ask when each payment falls due; do not compare unlike payment calendars as the same savings outcome.
04 · The payee matters
Make the recipient record legible before a family event
Ask the insurer to identify the policy owner, the person insured, every accepted beneficiary nomination and any assignment to a lender. A family conversation does not amend the insurer’s record. After marriage, separation, birth, death or a loan change, request written confirmation. If a child, estate or business is involved, obtain case-specific legal and insurer guidance; this page does not decide priority or tax treatment.
Owner
Who may change the contract, pays premiums and receives notices?
Insured life
Whose death, illness or disability is covered, and which disclosures were accepted?
Recipient
Who receives payment under the current wording, nomination and assignment?
Keep NSSF survivor eligibility, employer scheme membership and private nomination as separate evidence files.
05 · Invented arithmetic, not advice
A KSh 90,000 monthly need is only the first line
Suppose a household invents twelve months of KSh 90,000 essential spending, KSh 360,000 of education costs, a KSh 1,500,000 loan and KSh 400,000 of accessible savings. The gross task is KSh 2,940,000; subtracting those savings leaves KSh 2,540,000. This is not a recommended sum insured, policy quote or forecast. Inflation, timing, taxes, existing cover, debt terms and the intended recipient are deliberately unresolved.
| Line | Illustrative amount | Decision before using it |
|---|---|---|
| Essentials | KSh 1,080,000 | KSh 90,000 × 12 months; verify actual bills and transition length. |
| Education | KSh 360,000 | Check fee dates and who can receive or administer funds. |
| Loan | KSh 1,500,000 | Confirm outstanding balance and any credit-life lender payment. |
| Accessible savings | − KSh 400,000 | Subtract only if available at the relevant time. |
| Unadjusted gap | KSh 2,540,000 | If verified credit life settles the loan, remove that same loan need; do not count both its payout and the family’s loan expense. |
Ask for proposals against the corrected household brief, not this example’s total. A lender-only payment must not be treated as unrestricted cash for school or rent.
06 · A file the family can use
Preserve the accepted record and a written decision trail
- Locate the contract.
Keep policy number, schedule, wording, proposal, amendments and premium history.
- Confirm the payee.
Find nomination, assignment, employer membership or NSSF records without assuming they share one process.
- Ask for the claim route.
Use the insurer’s current verified channel for death or living-benefit evidence; keep submission dates and reference.
- Read the calculation.
Request written reasons, benefit calculation and any exclusion or lapse basis. Preserve the insurer response before using the IRA complaint route.
Use the deadline for the event: Absa’s linked brochure gives written notice within 180 days for death, disability or critical illness and 90 days for accidental hospitalisation. Prudential’s page gives 180 days for disability submissions. These are source-specific statements, not one Kenya-wide deadline or permission to delay notice. Confirm the current selected contract promptly.
Identity, medical, death and financial records are sensitive. Send them only through verified insurer or official channels; see the ODPC privacy guidance. This page collects none.
Life-insurance questions in Kenya
How much life insurance does my family need?
There is no universal amount. Map essential bills, dates, debt, intended payee and reliable resources, then seek an underwritten KSh proposal for the chosen job.
Are the ten insurer descriptions policies I can buy today?
No. They mix term, whole-life, income, savings and employer group routes. None is a complete accepted comparable household file or matched KSh quote; check current IRA class and issued terms.
Is credit-life cover money my family can spend?
Do not assume so. A lender may be policyholder or assignee; read the loan-linked certificate and settlement basis before counting any balance for the family.
Is NSSF survivor support a private life policy?
No. NSSF has its own statutory member, survivor and application rules. Check the current official route and keep its records separate from a private nomination.
Does employer group life continue after I leave?
Not automatically. Ask the employer and issuing insurer for active dates, leaving-employment rules and any conversion option before relying on continued protection.
Does term life pay a maturity value?
Do not infer one. A pure-protection term design and a savings-linked contract can look similar in a headline. Read the accepted survival and death benefit lines separately.
Can a disability or critical-illness claim reduce death cover?
It can under some designs. Prudential’s PRUTerm public page says a settled total-permanent-disability claim ends the death benefit. Check selected wording and rider interaction.
Is the first year covered the same way for every insurer?
No. Britam’s published Family Income no-medical route has a different non-accidental-death outcome during its initial twelve months. Confirm the underwriting and waiting terms for the proposed policy.
Can I change a beneficiary by telling my family?
No family conversation substitutes for the insurer’s accepted process. Request written acknowledgment of any nomination or assignment change.
How do I compare a monthly-income benefit with a lump sum?
Request the exact payment period, start date, escalation formula and conditions, then compare against the same household need and recipient. Do not add headline amounts as if their timing were identical.
Does a five-year Family Income policy pay income for five years?
Not automatically. Britam’s July 2026 brochure separates the cover term from the selected 3-, 5- or 10-year benefit-payment period. Read both choices and the accepted start of income.
Does accident-only life cover include death from illness?
Absa’s Ultimate Protector brochure distinguishes accident-only cover from comprehensive cover. Do not assume the accident-only option pays for ordinary illness death because the product also has a whole-life description.
Is Britam’s first-year accidental-death benefit settled by its brochure?
No. The website qualifies the no-medical first-year refund by non-accidental death; its July 2026 brochure does not make that qualification. Ask for the selected insurer wording rather than choosing the more favourable interpretation.
Are Triplex survival payments added to the death claim?
Jubilee describes a full sum-assured death benefit plus accrued bonuses regardless of earlier survival payments. That does not promise all future survival and maturity payments after death; check the selected contract and any assignment.
Is a life-policy premium refund the sum insured?
No. A refund returns the relevant premiums under its conditions; it is not the larger death or living benefit. Check which early-cover event leads to which outcome.
Which life insurer is cheapest in Kenya?
This edition does not establish a market-wide cheapest insurer. Age, health, sum, term, riders, payment frequency and underwriting change the price; no matched ten-policy quote set is verified.
Will AfriPolicyCover take my health or beneficiary details here?
No. This page has no quote form, no identity or health collection, no provider redirect and no claim submission. Use verified issuer channels for sensitive records.
